The Conquered Province Even though our government was willing to purchase California, the fact remains we did go to war against Mexico. The war was fought on many fronts, many of which were taking place at the same time. The war ended at the very gates of Mexico City. The Treaty was signed on February 2, 1848. Nine days earlier, on January 24th, gold had already been discovered in California. This book is based on the works of Bernard DeVoto, one of the greatest historians of our time, if not the greatest. He wrote the history of the Westward Movement. DeVoto's reference of California being a Conquered Province prompted me to use this reference for the title of book 2. Click on the book to order.
