On this website we are offering a series of books relating to the history of California. They can be used in the classrooms, school libraries and for home teaching. The books are about people and their lives as they went through trials and tribulations of everyday life. The books are geared for the fourth grade student to give them actual accounts of what really happened back in time.

The Land Known as Alta California is more than a story about missions. It is about the soldiers, settlers, traders, and trappers who stayed to live out their lives on the land they grew to love. Back in 1847 six states were included in this land. Even though our government was willing to purchase California, the fact remains that we did go to war with Mexico and thus, to many historians California is described as The Conquered Province. Gold Discovered in California is about the greatest migration of man with a single purpose in mind. This story will delight circus enthusiasts with its tales of the performers and the gold that was thrown at their feet!

A young veteran of the war brought his family By Way of Panama, the shorter, less hazardous, but more expensive route to the thriving metropolis of San Francisco. They Came Around the Horn is the story of a cattle drive and the long journey to the Valley of San Gabriel where cattle had roamed for over a hundred years. This books also chronicles the mostly Irish workmen hired to lay track westward across the prairie from Omaha to establish the Transcontinental Railroad Line. They Came Overland by Train continues the story of the railroad and the rate wars that ensued. Among the home-seekers lured to the Pacific Coast on the new railroad was a religious group, the Quakers, who bought land and established a colony.

The Story Ends Where it Began: Along El Camino Real tells of the families riding along the most important highway of all, El Camino Real or The Kings Highway. Unlike many other states, many coming to California continued to venture on as far as Autralia and throughout the rest of the world.
